Up in the air: 3rd largest Danish airport expands rapidly

December 2011

Air traffic on international flights to Aalborg, in the Nordic region of Jutland, is on the rise – resulting in an expansion of the airport.

Aalborg Airport will begin expanding the airport with an investment of 23.5 million euro in January 2012 finishing in May 2013. The investment involves expanding the number of gates from six to 12, creating a new lounge area and also the airport’s tax-free shop will enlarge significantly in size from 70 to 510 square meters.

The CEO at Aalborg Airport, Søren Svendsen, points out that for example KLM, one of the operating airlines at Aalborg Airport, has expressed a desire for a lounge area. Initially, the lounge area will be 120 square meters with the possibility of expanding to 300 square meters later on.

Aalborg Airport may expand in size physically, but the airport has also grown in other ways. In spring 2011, KLM launched four daily flight connections between Aalborg-Amsterdam connecting Aalborg to more than 200 international destinations. Now in spring 2012, the same ailrine will expand their daily flight connections between Aalborg-Amsterdam from four to six.

The Spanish airline Vueling will launch flight connections between Aalborg-Barcelona and Norwegian plan to open a new route Aalborg-Berlin as well as re-open the Aalborg-Gatwick route, all in 2012. Besides these destinations, Aalborg is directly connected to Copenhagen by 44 daily roundtrip flights, to Oslo and Malaga, and various other holiday destinations arcoss the world (winter and summer). However, Aalborg Ariport's CEO, Søren Svendsen, wishes for more; his goal is to expand with a direct route to London Heathrow as well as a Stockholm route in the near future.

In recent years, Aalborg Airport has become a large airport. Extensive growth has made Aalborg Airport the third largest airport in Denmark.
You will notice that the terminal building of Aalborg Airport has a new, elegant and classic design, in which it is easy to find your way round. The terminal building was built in 2001 by the Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen from Aarhus, also known for impressive achitectural gems and meeting venues(!) such as the ARoS Museum of Modern art in Aarhus and the Royal Danish Library, “The Black Diamond”, in Copenhagen.
