Ærø Art Gallery

NB! The art gallery is closed from 27 September 2020 and reopens Easter 2021.

Ærø Kunsthal is one of Denmark's largest art halls and it is beautiful located in an old merchant's house from 1783 in Vestergade 41 in Ærøskøbing.

Ærø Kunsthal is located in Vestergade in Ærøskøbing and has 2 exhibition buildings and is one of Denmark's largest galleries with its 1,000 sqm. In 2017, artist Beth Mohr took over the largest grocery farm on Ærø, a large part of which had been empty for many years. 1,000 sqm has been renovated and converted into an art gallery.

The original plan was to erect traditional white exhibition walls. But the plan changed when a multitude of chipboard was removed from the walls and 30 tons of waste was driven away. Behind all the clutter, the original floors and colorful walls from 1783 emerged. We have chosen to preserve this originality, and the rooms now provide some fantastic contrasts to modern art.

Traditional art halls are funded by the public and foundations and do not sell the exhibited art. Ærø Kunsthal receives no public support and sells all art on display. It is actually a gallery, albeit one of the largest in Denmark.

"We look forward to showing good modern art in Ærø Kunsthal - this year we have 4 artists related to Ærø: Jonas teaches at the art academy, Susanne has a house on the island, Pia's family is from Ærø and I now also live permanently on the island," says director and artistic director Beth Mohr, who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
