From the Potato Holiday to the Autumn Holiday

In 1899, a special potato holiday was introduced during week 42. Schoolchildren were given a week off so they could help with the potato harvest in the fields.

Today, the potato holiday has become the Danish autumn half-term holiday. At Hillerød Bymuseum, the story of the potato provides the inspiration for a creative activity for children and adults.

Make your own potato creature

At the museum, children and playful adults can create their own potato creatures. Potatoes and other materials are provided, giving everyone the chance to use their imagination and make their own unique figures.

Along the way, visitors can also discover some of the amusing Danish expressions associated with potatoes.

Local history for children

After making potato creatures, the visit can continue upstairs in 'Tidens Gade' – “The Street of Time”. Here, children and adults can explore the history of Hillerød through play and recreate historic settings.

Visit shops from another time

In 'Tidens Gade', families can explore an old hairdresser’s salon, a grocer’s shop, and a toy shop, offering a glimpse into everyday life in Hillerød in times gone by.
