Viborg on your own

Take a stroll around some of the city's sights, historical sites and beautiful parks.

1. Nytorv:

Nytorv is the geographical centre of Viborg, marked by the ‘Zero Stone’ in the middle of the square. Nytorv was a cemetery from 1040, but was abolished in 1584 on the orders of Frederik II. Remains of human bones can still be found under the paving. Read more about Nytorv.

2. Latinerhaven:

Latinerhaven is a lush, green oasis in the middle of Viborg's old town. It is divided into several smaller garden sections, including a beautiful section with perennials and rhododendrons and another with schnapps herbs. Read more about Latinerhaven.

3. Viborg Cathedral:

With its two towers and unique frescoes, Viborg Cathedral is the city's special landmark. The church's history dates back to the 12th century, but after several violent fires, only the old crypt remains. The rest has been rebuilt. Read more about Viborg Cathedral.

4. The Coronation Monument:

For 600 years (from Hardeknud in 1027 to Christian V in 1655), the kings of Denmark were crowned at this site. The statue of Queen Margrethe I (1387-1412) and her sister's nine-year-old grandson, Erik of Pomerania, was erected in memory of Viborg as a coronation city. Read more about the Coronation Monument.

5. Sct. Mogens Gade:

Sct. Mogens Gade is a long string of beautiful old houses, and here you can really feel the past. In the Middle Ages, the nobility lived in the southernmost part of Sct. Mogens Gade, craftsmen lived in the middle, and the farms were located furthest to the north. Read more about Sct. Mogens Gade.

6. Hans Tausens Minde:

This was the site of Gråbrødre Kirke, which was in use until 1812. The church then stood in ruins until it was removed in 1830. It was here that the Johannite monk and reformer Hans Tausen (1494-1561) spoke out against Rome. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation, a memorial stone was erected in 1836, and in 2004, in connection with the 475th anniversary of the Reformation, a sculpture by Bjørn Nørgaard was erected. Read more about Hans Tausen's Memorial.

7. The Bible Garden:

The Bible Garden was established in 1989 at Borgvold. In the garden, you will find a unique collection of herbs, shrubs and trees, all of which are mentioned in the Bible. Read more about the Bible Garden.

8. Borgvold:

Borgvold is a beautiful, romantic park with winding paths, bridges over streams, colourful beds of perennials and summer flowers, and a small bandstand with occasional summer entertainment. In the park, you can use the large playground and rent rowing boats, canoes and pedal boats. The good ship ‘Margrethe I’ moors at the Golf Salonen. Read more about Borgvold.
