Grydebjerg Skov – A Forest Walk and Heart Trail North of Sorø
Between Sorø and Ringsted, in the hilly moraine landscape that characterises central Zealand, lies Grydebjerg Skov. An old deciduous forest with a well-marked five-kilometre hiking route winding through undulating terrain, open clearings, and dense forest floor. The route also serves as a heart trail, making it part of the nationwide network of health-promoting walking routes — but here, the nature experience matters just as much as the physical steps.
The Landscape and Character of the Forest
Grydebjerg Skov takes its name from the distinctive hills that rise above the forest floor. The terrain was clearly shaped by the Ice Age, with steep slopes and deep hollows creating a dramatic contrast to the flat farmland surrounding the forest. The yellow arrows marking the route lead walkers through a varied forest environment — from dense beech groves with tall, straight trunks to open sections with oak and birch where sunlight reaches all the way down to the forest floor. In spring, the ground is covered in white anemones, and in autumn the changing leaf colours transform the forest into a display of orange, gold, and deep red.
Silence and Contemplation
What strikes you about Grydebjerg Skov is the silence. The forest lies sufficiently off the beaten track that you rarely encounter many other walkers, and the soundscape is limited to birdsong, gusts of wind in the treetops, and your own footsteps on the soft forest path. This makes the route an excellent choice for those seeking contemplation and peace — a walk where you can switch off from everyday life and simply be present in nature. The hilly terrain gives the walk a pleasant physical dimension without being challenging, and the five kilometres are manageable for most people, including families with children used to shorter outings.
Wildlife and Nature Observations
The forest is home to a wide range of woodland birds — woodpeckers, treecreepers, and tits are regularly spotted along the route, and in the early morning hours you may be lucky enough to see roe deer at the forest's clearings. The bottoms of the forest hollows are often damp, and here ferns and mosses grow in dense carpets that give the forest an almost primeval atmosphere. The old oak trees scattered among the beeches attract insects that in turn draw birds, and the entire forest hums with life even when it seems quiet to the human ear.
