Løvenborg Castle – Renaissance Castle near Regstrup

Late Renaissance castle behind a double moat near Regstrup
Ten kilometres south-west of Holbæk, in the parish of Butterup, lies Løvenborg – one of the most beautifully situated manor complexes in West Zealand. The three-winged main building dates from 1634 and was built by Malte Juul, when the estate was still called Birkholm. It rises from the moat on a plinth of granite ashlar and is surrounded by water on all four sides – one of the most complete late Renaissance complexes of its kind on Zealand.
The history of the site reaches far beyond the building itself. The estate's roots go back to the time of Archbishop Absalon, and over the centuries both name and owners changed. In 1766 the entailed estate of Løvenborg was established, and in 1773 it was raised to a barony.
The baroque garden and the listed lime avenue
The garden was laid out in baroque style in 1757 by Johan Scherg and is bounded towards the lake by a lime avenue and clipped lime hedges with niches and domed forms. The avenue is a listed monument and is worth a visit in its own right – the old limes form a green space that changes character with the seasons.
Løvenborg is privately owned. Please contact the estate for current information about access, guided tours and events.
