Open House at Blåvand Bird Observatory

Throughout the day, you can hear stories about the birds’ fascinating lives, their impressive migration routes and the many species that pass through Blåvand every autumn on their journey between breeding grounds and wintering grounds. How far do the birds fly? How do they find their way? And why is Blåvand a particularly important place for both migratory and resting birds? You can find out more when the station’s staff show you round and tell you about their work.

There will be regular opportunities to join a short bird-ringing tour and see how the birds are caught, examined, ringed and released again. Every year, over 5,000 birds are ringed at Blåvand Bird Station, and this work provides important insights into the birds’ age, condition, migration patterns and survival rates. It’s a unique opportunity to get up close to the birds and experience the work in action.

You can also get an introduction to how you can start birdwatching yourself. We’ll offer advice on binoculars, good places to visit, and which apps are useful if you want to get to know the birds better. The event is therefore suitable for curious beginners, families and more experienced nature enthusiasts alike.

The Eagle Club will also be taking part on the day, organising fun and educational activities for children. Here, the youngest nature enthusiasts can explore the world of birds through play, small tasks and activities that make it easy and exciting to learn more about birds, nature and the migration at Blåvand. It will be a great opportunity for children and families to experience nature together in an active and engaging way.
