Slagelse Street & Art Festival — when the city becomes a canvas
Every year in May, the centre of Slagelse transforms into a vast open-air gallery when the Slagelse Street & Art Festival invites street art artists from Denmark and abroad to create new works directly on the city’s facades, walls and gables. In just a few years, the festival has put Slagelse on the map as one of Denmark’s most exciting street art cities, and the permanent works make a walk through town an experience in itself — long after the festival has ended.
Art that grows out of the walls
What makes the Slagelse Street & Art Festival special is that the art is created live. As the audience watches, artists work their way up scaffolding and cherry pickers to transform anonymous building surfaces into richly coloured interpretations of everyday life, imagination and human experience. Each year the festival receives a theme that ties the works together and gives the city a new layer of visual identity. The finished works remain in place and are freely accessible — a permanent collection that grows from year to year.
More than murals
The festival is far more than artists with spray cans. Over three days the programme offers a street food market with local and international food stalls, live music on small stages around the city centre, workshops where children and adults can try their hand at graffiti and stencil art, and guided tours that tell the stories behind the existing works. Nytorv in Slagelse serves as the festival’s epicentre, but the art spreads into the streets and surprises even the locals with new motifs on familiar corners.
A festival for the whole family
The Slagelse Street & Art Festival has been designed from the start as an event that brings all generations together. Children are fascinated by watching the enormous paintings take shape, while parents enjoy the atmosphere among the street food stalls and the many artworks. There is no admission fee — the festival is free and open to all. The relaxed mood in the city centre, where streets and squares buzz with creativity, makes it an extraordinary weekend experience that sharpens the eye for the visual in everyday life.
Slagelse as a street art destination
The festival has left behind an impressive collection of permanent works in Slagelse, and the city now functions as an open gallery all year round. From large-scale photorealism to abstract compositions and playful figures, the works cover a broad spectrum of styles. Several of the artists are internationally recognised, and Slagelse has thus earned a place on the global street art map. A walk through the city offers surprises around every corner — art without opening hours or admission fees.
Experiences nearby
The centre of Slagelse also offers shopping, café culture and historic attractions. Trelleborg Viking Fortress lies just a few kilometres away and provides a fascinating glimpse into Denmark’s Viking age. Korsør harbour with views across the Great Belt is also close by, and the coastline along the Belt invites beach trips and nature walks.
