The small cosy holiday island of Tunø has plenty of unique atmosphere. The island is quite small and you can easily get around on foot but it is definitely also recommendable to get on the bike and go for a ride on the quiet traffic-free roads. It is not possible to bring your car on the Tunø ferry which means that the island is car-free but you can see a few tractors and unique homemade vehicles. The absence of traffic noise combined with an idyllic scenery with many half-timbered houses and beautiful nature makes the trip particularly inviting.

What to see

There is no waymarked route on Tunø but a network of narrow asphalt and dirt roads. You will likely start at the small but lively harbour which serves as a lively connection for the island. There are great facilities in connection with the ferry port and marina including a smokehouse and restaurant and several tables and benches where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine and your packed lunch. The charming village is located in connection with the harbour. There are both restaurants, activities and a grocery store. The village has lots of unique characteristica that make is easy to see that you are on an island including the combined church tower and lighthouse and the concrete milk tables at the side of the road.

Further inland you will find forest and open landscape with fields. You will pass the little airfield on the western part of Tunø. The route on the map is 11 kilometres long.

If you have time for it, you can combine the bike ride with a hike around the island along the coast. The hiking route is placed on top of the tall slopes at the coast – often with a great view. There is a treasure hunt for children that follows the hiking route. If you combine the hike at the coast with a bike ride further inland, you can experience the whole island on a daytrip.

Rent a bicycle

At the harbour on Tunø, very close to where you get off the ferry, you can rent a bike and explore the island. Tunø Bicycle Rental (Cykeludlejning) has bicycles for adults and children and bikes with trailers. You will pay a limited daily price for renting a bike. You won’t miss the bike rental as you get off the ferry and make your way towards the island’s main street. You will see it on your left hand.
