Bispehuen – Geological landmark on Fur

Stendalgraven is Fur’s largest and most accessible diatomite quarry, where visitors can observe striking layers of volcanic ash and diatomite in the exposed cliffs.
As part of the landscape restoration, a spectacular column of folded diatomite was preserved near Rødstenvej. Its distinctive shape inspired the name Bispehuen (“The Bishop’s Hat”).
When mining began, this formation was left untouched due to its unique, knotted layers of ash and diatomite, serving as a reminder of the original landscape height.
Above Bispehuen stands the bronze sculpture Molermanden, gazing over the man-made quarry and the natural landscape beyond – including the fjord and Livø.
Information boards and picnic tables are available near Molermanden and on the hill opposite the quarry.
