Christiansø Harbour has two entrances, one on either side of the swing bridge that connects the two main islands and divides the harbour into a south harbour and a north harbour.

Visiting sailors are welcome in both harbours, making it possible to approach the islands in all wind directions. A visit to the island in your own boat is unforgettable.

Someone must have had leisure sailors in mind when they created a fantastic natural harbour between two islands in waters 100 metres deep, ten nautical miles from Bornholm – much like Utklippan, ten nautical miles from Karlskrona.

Christiansø has 100 year-round residents. It is a community with an inn, church, police station, school, grocer with bakery, post office, museum, gallery, community hall, campsite and sales of the famous Christiansø spiced herring, produced and sold on the island.

Experiencing this community is special. One story tells of a woman who lived a long life on Christiansø without ever going to Frederiksø: “What would I do there?” The island is self-sufficient in electricity and formerly also drinking water, which for several hundred years consisted of rainwater collected in open wells. Everything on the island is housed in listed buildings that were once part of a large fortification.

The archipelago includes the Græsholmen bird sanctuary, home to the Baltic Sea’s “penguins”. In recent years, the population of grey seals weighing around 300 kilos has grown to such an extent that two seals fall into the water whenever a newly arrived seal pushes its way onto the skerry of Tatt.
