Dalum Church - medieval church

Just southwest of Odense city centre stands Dalum Monastery Church, one of the city's oldest and most fascinating medieval buildings. Built in the first half of the 13th century as part of a Benedictine nunnery, the church is now the only surviving part of the original monastery complex. A visit offers a glimpse into a time when monastic life played an important role in the history of Odense.

Dalum Monastery Church is the last visible remnant of a medieval nunnery

Although the monastery buildings disappeared centuries ago, traces of the former complex can still be seen around the church. During the Middle Ages, the church formed the northern wing of a four-sided monastery where the nuns lived and worked. On the church's southern side, you can still spot marks from the former cloister that once connected the buildings.

Standing here today, it is easy to imagine daily life within the monastery more than 700 years ago. This close connection to the former nunnery is what makes Dalum Monastery Church one of Odense's most distinctive historic attractions.

Discover one of Odense's most important medieval churches

Dalum Monastery Church is also well worth a visit for its architecture. The oldest sections were built in brick during the late Romanesque period, while later additions reflect the transition to Gothic architecture. Look closely and you'll notice characteristic round-arched windows, decorative brickwork and the striking tower that was added during the late Middle Ages.

Although the church has undergone several alterations over the centuries, it still retains much of its medieval character and is considered one of the most important surviving medieval churches in Odense.

What should you look out for during your visit?

Inside the church, several features reveal its long history as both a monastery church and a parish church. Be sure to look out for:

  • The Baroque altarpiece and pulpit dating from the 17th century.
  • Historic memorials and epitaphs connected to people from the local area and the church's past.
  • The medieval baptismal font, which still preserves traces of its original colours.
  • Architectural features that reflect the church's former role as a monastery church, where the nuns attended services separately from the congregation.

A historic stop near the Odense River

Dalum Monastery Church is set in green surroundings close to the Odense River and Dalum Monastery. A visit can easily be combined with a walk along the river or other experiences in the area. The church offers fascinating insights into Odense's medieval history while also providing a peaceful place to pause and take a moment away from the bustle of the city.
