The body as protest and performance
Disobedient – The Body in Punk is based on a postdoctoral research project with Aarhus University and curator Marie Arleth Skov. The exhibition delves into the aesthetics of punk culture from the late 1970s and early 1980s – with roots in Dada, surrealism and political rebellion.
The body acts as a canvas: DIY identities, bold costumes and experimental performance forms show how punk bodies could be provocative, political and playful.
The focus is also on feminist, queer and performative practices that challenge norms around sexuality and gender.
The exhibition combines art, music history and political theory – and invites visitors to talks, performances and academic events so that they can understand punk's bodily rebellion on multiple levels.
