The Bridge That Binds Denmark Together

The Storebæltsbroen is more than a piece of infrastructure. It is a landmark, an engineering masterpiece and for many travellers the moment the holiday truly begins. When you drive out across the Great Belt Fixed Link and the horizon opens with water on both sides, the pylons rising ahead of you and Zealand or Funen appearing in the distance, it is hard not to be struck by the sheer scale and the views.

The link crosses one of Denmark's most significant waterways, connecting Zealand with Funen – and thereby eastern Denmark with western Denmark. The total stretch is 18 kilometres long and consists of the East Bridge (a suspension bridge), the West Bridge (a low-level bridge) and the East Tunnel for the railway. The structure was built between 1988 and 1998 and has fundamentally changed Danish travel patterns since its opening.

The East Bridge – Suspension Bridge with Iconic Pylons

The most recognisable element is the East Bridge, the great suspension bridge with its two 254-metre-high pylons and elegant cable profile that draws its silhouette against the sky in any weather. The bridge has become one of Denmark's most photographed structures and a symbol of Danish engineering prowess. Its free span of 1,624 metres makes it one of the longest in the world, and the 65-metre clearance allows even the largest vessels to pass beneath.

From the car window the bridge unfolds as a quiet drama: first the flat run across the West Bridge, then the gradual climb to the highest point of the East Bridge, where the view extends in every direction. On clear days you can see Langeland to the south, Samsø to the north, and the coastlines of both Zealand and Funen at once.

Sprogø – The Island in the Middle of the Belt

Halfway across the Great Belt lies the small island of Sprogø, serving as the junction between bridges and tunnel. The island with its distinctive lighthouse has played a changing role in Danish history – from a medieval royal waiting station through the tragic women's institution of the 20th century to today's protected nature reserve with rare flora and fauna.

Sprogø is normally closed to the public, but Destination Sjælland organises guided tours to Sprogø, where you can experience the island's nature and hear its history told by a local guide. It is a truly special experience to set foot on the tiny island in the middle of one of Scandinavia's busiest waterways.

The Experience from Both Sides

The Storebæltsbroen can be experienced from multiple angles. Driving from Zealand toward Funen, the journey starts at Halsskov near Korsør, where the ferry once departed. From here you see the bridge's full profile rising above the water. From the Funen side the link begins at Knudshoved near Nyborg. Both sides have rest areas with views of the bridge, and from Korsør's harbour area you can get close to the construction itself.

For many the crossing itself is a highlight – especially for children experiencing the enormous dimensions for the first time. The bridge is also a favourite subject for photographers, capturing it in everything from morning mist to dramatic sunsets over the belt.

Experiences in the Area

In Korsør on the Zealand side you will find a historic harbour town with fortifications, maritime traditions and good restaurants. To the north lies Kalundborg with its five-towered church, and to the south the coastal landscape stretches toward Skælskør and Agersø. On the Funen side, Nyborg offers a medieval castle and charming town centre. For more ideas on experiences, excursions and guided tours in the region, visit destinationsjaelland.dk.
