Helgenæs Church
Visit Helgenæs Church in Stødov on Djursland, where medieval architecture, frescoes and historic furnishings meet the view across Aarhus Bay. The whitewashed church stands high up in the open countryside on Helgenæs.

A medieval church overlooking the landscape
Helgenæs Church stands on elevated ground near the village of Stødov. From here, the landscape opens towards Aarhus Bay, while the church’s whitewashed walls and red roofs stand out clearly against the open surroundings.
The oldest parts of the church date from the Romanesque period and were built from fieldstone. During the late Middle Ages, the building was extended with a tower and porch, while the chancel was given a vaulted ceiling.
Furnishings from several centuries
The church’s almost cylindrical granite font dates from the Romanesque period. The pulpit and altarpiece reflect Renaissance church decoration, while the nave’s timber ceiling provides a simple contrast to the decorated vaulting of the chancel.
A more recent cross made from bog oak and bronze hangs on the north wall. It was created by the local artist Knud Nordstrøm and installed in 2014.
