Hermes | Granite Sculpture
In the heart of Kongensgade stands Hermes, a striking granite sculpture created by Danish artist Mogens Møller. Installed in 2002, the eight-metre-tall artwork draws inspiration from both Kongensgade's role as a shopping street and the area's history. Hermes is more than a single sculpture. Made up of several elements, the artwork tells a story of trade, urban life and the connection between past and present.
More than a granite sculpture
The tall, egg-shaped granite figure is the first thing most visitors notice. But Hermes consists of much more than its main figure. The artwork also includes a sphinx beneath an arch, six granite pillars and a wall featuring symbols associated with the Greek god Hermes.
Together, these elements create an artwork that rewards a closer look.
Why is Hermes located in Kongensgade?
In Greek mythology, Hermes is the god of trade, travellers and communication. He was therefore a fitting symbol for Kongensgade, which has long been one of Odense's most important shopping streets.
The wall in front of the sculpture features wings and snakes, two of Hermes' best-known attributes. The artwork was installed to mark Kongensgade's transformation into a pedestrian street and serves as an artistic interpretation of the street's identity as a place for commerce and city life.
A Viking ornament links past and present
Set into the wall is an enlarged copy of a Viking ornament discovered during archaeological excavations in Kongensgade. This detail connects today's shopping street with more than a thousand years of local history.
While Hermes represents trade and activity in the present day, the Viking ornament is a reminder that people have lived, travelled and traded in this area for centuries.

When visiting Hermes, see if you can spot:

• The enlarged Viking ornament in the wall
• The Chinese characters on the granite pillars
• The word "PEACE" on the wall facing Østre Stationsvej
• The names of the stonemasons who helped create the artwork
