Røsnæs Lighthouse – where West Zealand meets the Great Belt

At the very tip of the Røsnæs peninsula, which stretches almost 15 kilometres into the Great Belt from Kalundborg, stands the old lighthouse as a landmark of the entire West Zealand coast. Røsnæs Fyr is far more than a lighthouse – it is one of the most striking viewpoints in the region, with unobstructed views across the strait to Samsø, Funen, and on clear days all the way to the Jutland coast.

A landscape shaped by the Ice Age

The Røsnæs peninsula is geologically unique. The Ice Age left behind a rolling terrain with steep cliffs to the north and gentle slopes to the south. The vegetation is low and windswept – heather, wild roses and hawthorn cling to the chalky hillsides. It resembles a North Atlantic coastal landscape more than typical Danish scenery, and that contrast is precisely what makes the place special.

From the car park at the lighthouse, paths lead along the cliff edge northwards, where steep slopes drop down to the water. Here you can find fossils in the chalk layers and study the geological formations for which Røsnæs is renowned among nature enthusiasts.

The lighthouse and life around it

The lighthouse was built in 1846 and has served as a navigation aid for shipping through the Great Belt for nearly 180 years. Today the area around the tower is a gathering point with a small café where locals and visitors meet over coffee with a sea view. Find current opening hours for the lighthouse and café here.

In autumn, migrating birds head south, and Røsnæs becomes one of West Zealand's finest spots for watching the migration. Birds of prey, songbirds and seabirds pass in their thousands, as the peninsula tip acts as a natural funnel for the flyway.

Hiking on the peninsula

A loop walk from the lighthouse along the north coast offers an hour of intense nature experience. The paths are uneven and natural – sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain. Along the way you pass old chalk quarries, remnants of Second World War military installations, and enjoy constantly changing perspectives over the Great Belt.

Experiences nearby

Kalundborg is just 15 minutes from Røsnæs Fyr and offers the famous Five-Towered Church from 1170, a historic town centre and waterfront restaurants. To the east, the entire Sejerø Bay coastline opens up with bathing beaches, small harbours and Havnsø, from where the ferry sails to the car-free island of Nekselø.
