A mill from the early 19th century

Lumby Mill was built in 1820 by miller Rasmus Pedersen as a smock mill with a gallery. A few years later, it was granted royal privilege to operate as a grain mill, and during the 19th century both the mill and the surrounding mill farm were expanded.

Like many other mills, Lumby Mill was gradually adapted to new technology. The sails and machinery were modernised over time to make the work more efficient and to take better advantage of changing wind conditions.

The mill was listed in 1959 and has since been restored several times. Today, both the building and parts of the historic machinery have been preserved, giving visitors a clear sense of what it was like when a windmill was also a working environment.

What makes Lumby Mill particularly interesting is that its history is not confined to the exterior. The mill is still operational, and on selected days visitors can see the machinery in motion and learn more about the miller’s work and the mechanics behind the large sails.

Inside, gears, shafts and millstones show how wind power was transferred through the building and used to grind grain. It offers a tangible insight into a technology that played an important role in agriculture and everyday life for centuries.

Living milling heritage in Lumby

Today, Lumby Mill is maintained and brought to life with the help of a large group of volunteers. They help with maintenance, guided tours and events and play an important part in preserving the buildings, machinery and knowledge of traditional milling.

The mill farm also hosts a variety of activities throughout the year. If you would like to see the mill from the inside or experience it in operation, it is worth checking the current opening and event days before your visit.
