From the Great Belt to Viking Country

National Cycling Route N6 connects Esbjerg on the west coast of Jutland with Copenhagen, passing through some of the most historically rich landscapes in West Zealand along the way. Through Slagelse, the route follows a stretch that combines coastal air from the Great Belt with medieval town history and Viking heritage.

Arriving from Korsør

Cyclists approaching from the west reach the route via Korsør on the Great Belt. From here, the path follows the coastline through flat terrain with sweeping views across the water. The stretch between Korsør and Slagelse passes through open agricultural land where the wind from the Belt keeps the air salty and fields stretch to the horizon.

Slagelse – Medieval Market Town

Slagelse welcomes cyclists with a compact town centre that looks back on more than a thousand years of history. A few kilometres west of Slagelse lies Trelleborg, one of the best-preserved Viking fortresses in Scandinavia. The ring-shaped stronghold from the time of Harald Bluetooth around 980 AD sits on a hilltop between two waterways. Even without visiting the museum, you sense the scale of this structure when cycling past the massive earthen ramparts on the route.

The England Route – Historical Context

The N6 also carries the nickname the England Route, as its course follows ancient trade roads that once connected Denmark with England. Ships departed from the west coast across the North Sea, while the route inland passed through the country's trading hubs. Slagelse sat right on this path – a connection reaching back to the Middle Ages.

The Landscape

Between Slagelse and the eastern section towards Ringsted, the scenery shifts. Gentle hills with grain fields, small woodlands and wetlands characterise the stretch. The surface is predominantly asphalt, with some sections on well-maintained gravel paths. The terrain is moderately hilly – challenging enough to stay interesting but never overwhelming.

The starting point for the section through Slagelse Municipality is Slagelse railway station, which offers direct train connections to Copenhagen and Odense.
