Omø Havn – Gateway to the Little Island in the Great Belt

In the middle of the Great Belt, just a short ferry ride from Stigsnæs, lies Omø Havn – the small island harbour that welcomes everyone seeking one of Zealand’s most peaceful island experiences. Omø belongs to Slagelse Municipality but feels like a world apart. The harbour is the arrival point for both ferry passengers and the many sailors who stop here on their way through the belt.

A Sailing Harbour with Genuine Island Spirit

Omø Havn is one of the most popular ports of call in the Great Belt, and it’s not hard to understand why. The harbour sits protected behind a solid breakwater, and the atmosphere on the quay is relaxed and informal. Local fishermen mingle with visiting sailors from across Scandinavia, and conversations often start spontaneously over a cold beer in the evening sun.

The facilities are well-maintained and functional – everything a sailor needs after a day on the water. But it’s not the facilities that bring people back year after year. It’s the atmosphere. That particular blend of salt sea air, lark song over the fields, and the unhurried pace that only small islands can offer.

Omø – The Quiet Island

From the harbour, Omø spreads out in every direction – a flat, windswept island with approximately twelve kilometres of coastline. The landscape is characterised by open fields, low stone walls, and scattered farms. There are no crowds here, no commercial attractions, no noise. Just the sky, the sea, and the flat land stretching to the horizon.

The island has been inhabited for thousands of years, and traces of the past are everywhere – from prehistoric burial mounds to the distinctive church that has served as a seamark for sailors for generations. Omø’s lighthouse at the island’s southwestern corner is another landmark, visible far out across the belt.

Nature and Birdlife

Omø is one of the best birdwatching sites in the Great Belt area. The low-lying salt marshes and mudflats attract thousands of migrating birds in spring and autumn, and the island is designated as an important nature area. The beaches are undisturbed and often completely empty – both the stony stretches to the west and the sandier coves to the east.

For families with children, the island is paradise. Distances are short, traffic is virtually non-existent, and the opportunities to explore the coastline with nets and buckets are endless. Most families hire bicycles at the harbour and do a circular tour – the entire island can be covered in an afternoon.

Experiences in the Area

Omø itself is the experience – being on a small island with space and tranquillity. But the wider region offers more: the nearby island of Agø provides similar island experiences, Skælskør has a charming old town centre, and heading north along the coast brings you to Korsør Fortress with views over the belt.
