Reersø Havn – An Authentic Fishing Harbour on the Charming Peninsula
At the tip of the Reersø peninsula in Kalundborg Municipality lies Reersø Havn – a small fishing harbour with an atmosphere that feels like looking back to a time when fishing and maritime life were the heartbeat of everyday existence. The peninsula juts out into the Great Belt south of Kalundborg, and the harbour is its natural gathering point – the place where locals and visitors meet.
A Harbour with Character
Reersø Havn is not a modern marina. It is a working fishing harbour with roots going back generations, and that is precisely what makes it special. Here, fishing boats lie alongside small dinghies and the occasional visiting craft. On the quay, nets dry in the wind, and the smell of salt and seaweed hangs in the air.
During summer, the harbour hums with life. Local artisans have workshops in the old harbour buildings, and on good days you can buy freshly caught fish straight from the boats. It’s the kind of authentic experience that many larger harbours have lost, but Reersø has preserved.
Reersø – The Village Behind the Harbour
A few hundred metres from the harbour lies Reersø village – one of the best-preserved villages on western Zealand. Small thatched farms and houses cluster together along narrow lanes, and the overall impression is of a place where time has moved a little slower than in the rest of Denmark. The village is a protected cultural heritage site, and it shows – no new builds break the picture.
Walking through Reersø village is like leafing through a picture book of old Denmark. Half-timbering and whitewashed walls, hollyhocks along the roadside, and the sound of gulls from the harbour. It is genuine and unpolished – and that is precisely the point.
Nature on the Peninsula
The Reersø peninsula is surrounded by water on three sides, creating a special microclimate and rich birdlife. The salt marshes to the south attract wading birds during migration, and the coastline offers both stony beaches and more sheltered coves. On clear days, you can see across the Great Belt to Funen and Sprogø.
The peninsula is flat and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. A coastal circuit takes a couple of hours and offers changing views – from the open belt to the west to the calmer waters to the east where the small island of Musholm lies close by.
Experiences in the Area
Reersø sits centrally on western Zealand’s coastline with short distances to further experiences. To the north lies Kalundborg with its five-towered church and waterfront. To the south, the coast continues towards Mullerup and Korsør. And to the west, the Great Belt opens up with views of the bridge and the small islands.
For families with children, the peninsula is a safe and manageable place with short distances, shallow water, and plenty of opportunities to explore the coastline. Find more experiences and inspiration at destinationsjaelland.dk.
