Welcome to Stenmaglehaven

In peaceful, quiet surroundings in central Zealand lies Stenmaglehaven – a garden in rapid development, with something new laid out every year. Here things are created, rethought and built from reused materials. Everything grows out of the owners' own ideas, always balancing the tended and the natural.

The garden is full of details and stories. The split stones, for instance, come from a Zealand castle park – split by soldiers some 300 years ago and left over from the foundation stones of the castle itself. The garden is built in several levels, using more than 1,000 tonnes of stone; some individual stones weigh up to 11 tonnes.

Across 26,000 square metres you will find several hundred rhododendrons, perennials, dahlias and unusual trees. There are also several ponds and a 60-metre stream, together covering around 5,000 square metres.

The story behind the garden

When Dennis bought the property in 1997, the land consisted of a smaller garden and large grass fields grazed by cattle. He kept beef cattle until 2008 – only once the cows were gone did the garden slowly begin to take shape. In 2018 Louise moved in, and with her strong interest in house and garden the first joint project quickly became reality: that same autumn the stream and the koi pond were established, and several larger and smaller beds were laid out alongside them.

The name Stenmaglehaven refers both to the garden's location and to the large stones used throughout. In Old Danish "magle" means "large" – together with the setting, Stenmaglehaven was a natural choice of name.

Coffee and cake from the garden

We serve lovely cakes and freshly brewed coffee. All cakes are handmade from fresh ingredients, often from the garden itself – herbs, edible flowers, strawberries, blueberries, rhubarb, apples, pears and more.

All opening days can be found on our website.
