A Small and Unique Museum at Broholm Castle

On South Funen, between Oure and Gudme, lies the historic Broholm estate. In the park beside the castle moat, you will find a beautiful three-winged building filled with natural light. The building is one of Denmark’s oldest museum buildings and houses Chamberlain Frederik Sehested’s Collection of Antiquities.

The collection contains approximately 70,000 flint tools and other Stone Age artefacts, all discovered in the area surrounding Broholm.

Step inside and experience thousands of flint tools up close. The collection is presented by Svendborg Museum through brochures, digital guides and audio stories. You can listen to stories about ten selected objects, each revealing a fascinating chapter of Denmark’s prehistoric past.

The exhibition also highlights Frederik Sehested (1813–1882), his work and his significant contribution to Danish archaeology. Visitors can pick up a brochure with QR codes for audio stories about the families of Broholm and a map for exploring the castle park.

In the park, you can discover a remarkable log cabin built in 1879 using only Stone Age tools. Trees were felled and stripped of bark, reeds were cut for the roof, and every part of the construction was completed exclusively with prehistoric implements.

The museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and admission is free.

The collection is owned by Svendborg Museum, while the museum building is owned by Broholm Castle.
