Discover the Green Education Garden on Langeland

Right in the heart of Rudkøbing’s charming town centre, you’ll find the Green Education Garden. The garden connects the pedestrianised high street with the Langeland Geopark Visitor Centre, creating a green meeting place where nature, art, geology and local history come together. Here you can take a break from the town’s streets, explore the sculptures and plants, and find inspiration for further experiences on Langeland and Strynø. The garden is designed as a place where both children and adults can develop a curiosity about the islands’ landscape, wildlife and history.

Old oak sculptures steeped in history

The garden’s wooden sculptures were created by wood sculptor Allan Bo Jensen. The sculptures bring stories of the Ice Age, wildlife and local figures to life in a visual and sensory way. The sculptures are carved from old oak, probably 150–180 years old, which already carried its own history before becoming part of the garden. The wood comes from places such as Lohals and Rantzausminde. The sculptures are all shaped using a chainsaw.

Among the motifs, you will find portraits of Jens Winther, the founder of Langelands Museum, and Anne Hornum, the housekeeper and archaeologist.

Nature and biodiversity in the heart of Rudkøbing

Flowers, shrubs, fruit trees and other plants have been selected with a focus on biodiversity. The planting is designed to create favourable conditions for bees and other insects, whilst also turning the garden into a green oasis in the market town. As the trees and plants mature, the garden will take on more character and become a peaceful spot where you can pause between your adventures in Rudkøbing.

Visit the Langeland Geopark Visitor Centre

The Green Education Garden is directly connected to the Langeland Geopark Visitor Centre. Here, you can learn more about the geology, nature and cultural heritage of the UNESCO Global Geopark: The South Funen Archipelago. The exhibition covers, amongst other things, Langeland’s ‘hat hills’, coastlines, the formation of the archipelago and traces of human activity beneath the sea’s surface. A visit here will inspire you to venture further into the countryside and experience these stories where they belong.
