The Misanthrope
Jens Albinus plays Alceste, who fights falsehood but is trapped by his own infatuation. With sharp and heartbreaking humor, Det Kongelige Teater brings Molière’s comedy about love, stubbornness, and self-presentation into the present day.

Who is the most ridiculous in this self-absorbed age of self-presentation?
Experience Jens Albinus as the lovesick melancholic Alceste in Molière’s comedy The Misanthrope.
Alceste is a profound thinker and an intellectual who despises and fights falsehood and superficiality. Yet he is trapped in the prison of his own love.
He loves the young Célimène—almost as much as he hates being in love with her. When the opportunity finally arises for Alceste to reach out for Célimène’s love, he is so unyielding in his self-absorbed stubbornness that he cannot or dare not accept her offer unless she can become what he wants her to be.
Director Thomas Bendixen picks up the baton from 1666 and, with sharp and heartbreaking humor, brings Molière’s self-revealing comedy about self-loathing, self-presentation, and the longing to be loved into the present day.
