Café Deilig (Café Lovely)

Café Deilig is more than just a place for brunch or lunch in Odense. Housed in one of the distinctive buildings at H.C. Andersen’s House, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the café combines good food, green surroundings and contemporary architecture in the heart of the city. Behind Café Deilig is chef and proprietor Malte Dalby Christensen, whose experience from several of Odense’s notable restaurants is reflected in both the kitchen and the overall café experience.

A café framed by contemporary architecture

Many visitors are drawn to Café Deilig because of its location in H.C. Andersen’s Garden, but the building itself is part of the attraction. The café is housed in one of the distinctive buildings that form part of H.C. Andersen’s House, where architecture and landscape have been carefully integrated. While most of the museum is hidden underground, the café opens onto the garden through expansive glass façades that fill the space with natural light.

One of the first things you notice is the combination of large glass panels and exposed timber structures. The architects intentionally used diagonal wooden braces as a contemporary interpretation of the area's historic half-timbered houses, including the house where Hans Christian Andersen was born. Many visitors feel as though they are sitting inside a half-timbered building where the traditional infill has been replaced with glass.

Brunch and lunch in green surroundings

Café Deilig serves brunch, lunch and café favourites in relaxed surroundings close to some of Odense’s most popular cultural attractions. Guests can create their own brunch plate, while the lunch menu features open sandwiches and other dishes prepared with a focus on quality ingredients.

It is equally suited to a leisurely lunch or a coffee break after exploring the city. The garden setting creates a calm atmosphere, even though the café is only a short walk from the pedestrian streets and the city centre.

Where the café and its surroundings come together

Whether you come for the brunch, the lunch or the setting, it is difficult to separate one part of the experience from another. The café is closely connected to both the garden and the surrounding architecture. That combination gives the café a character you do not find in many other places in the city.
