The Gudenå Trail stage 6 - Voervadsbro to Klostermølle
This short but scenic stage of the Gudenå Trail follows the Gudenå River past two of it's biggest nature attractions before reaching the shores of Mossø, the largest lake in Jutland.

Hiking in the Danish Lake District Søhøjlandet
Forests, lakes and hills are on the menu on this stage. Along the route, you can take in impressive views across the Danish Lake District Søhøjlandet from the top of The Sugar Loaf (Sukkertoppen) before continuing to Klostermølle – a former monastery and paper mill that today serves as a historic excursion spot.
About the route
At just 6 kilometres, stage 6 of the Gudenå Trail is the shortest section of the entire the Gudenå Trail. This stage begins in the small village of Voervadsbro. From here, you follow the gravel road Højlundvej north along the banks of the River Gudenå. During the first half of the stage, you will have Højlund Forest on one side and the river on the other.
After a few kilometres, the trail turns into the forest, and from there it is a steep climb towards the top of The Sugar Loaf. From the summit, the trail continues down the other side of The Sugar Loaf to Klostermølle on the shores of Mossø. Here, you can explore the old exhibition buildings, visit the birdwatching tower inside Denmark’s longest wooden building or wander down to the lakeside. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a packed lunch in the natural surroundings.
Because of the steep ascent to The Sugar Loaf, this route is not suitable for wheelchair users. Most of the trail follows gravel paths.
In Voervadsbro, you can stop by the delicatessen Det Lille Røgeri to pick up a few items for the journey. Apart from this shop, there are no opportunities to stock up on supplies along stage 6.
Accommodation and transport
Let us be honest – public transport options are fairly limited on this section of the trail. During the summer season, however, you can catch a lift with the free bus, Modstrømsbussen, which travels south along the Gudenå River once a day. It stops at both Klostermølle and Voervadsbro.
Voervadsbro is served by bus routes 112 (Horsens) and 502 (Skanderborg-Brædstrup). However, please note that departures are relatively limited. It is also possible to book a flex trip. If you need transport between two points on the route, you can book a flex trip. A flex trip must be booked two hours in advance and can be booked via Rejseplanen. Simply search for connections between the two locations, and a trip will be suggested if there are no bus departures.
There is a tent site in both Voervadsbro and at Klostermølle. MolaMola Workshop in Voervadsbro also has a fully equipped apartment available to book.
Digital help along the route
You can use this Google Maps map to find your way along the route. Alternatively, you can use the digital map on oplevgudenaa.dk/en/, where you can, among other things, check the flooding status and find inspiration for your trip. On the OplevGudenå website, you can also find inspiration for the hike and experiences along the way.
