Nekselø Havn – The Tiny Island Harbour in Sejerø Bay

On the small island of Nekselø in Sejerø Bay lies one of Denmark’s smallest and most charming harbours. Nekselø Havn is the arrival point for everyone taking the ferry from Havnsø, and the first thing you encounter is a miniature harbour with a couple of fishing boats, a few pleasure craft, and a silence that feels almost surreal – this close to Zealand’s coastline.

A Harbour Without Hurry

Nekselø Havn is not a marina in any conventional sense. There is no diesel pump, no shop, and no café. What there is, however, is something far rarer: authentic island atmosphere without any veneer. The harbour consists of a small breakwater that shields against westerly winds and a few quay berths where the ferry docks. The rest belongs to the handful of permanent residents and visiting sailors who find their way here.

Arriving at Nekselø Havn feels like turning the clock back fifty years. The rhythm is set by the ferry’s arrival and departure, and in between reigns a tranquillity that most people only remember from childhood. Children play on the jetty, a fisherman cleans his catch, and in the background you hear the gulls crying over Sejerø Bay.

Nekselø – The Island Behind the Harbour

From the harbour, two walking trails lead into the island’s interior. Nekselø is only about three kilometres long but offers a surprising variety: coastal cliffs to the north, lush meadows in the centre, and a small hilltop from which you can see both Sejerø and the Zealand coast. The island has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and the landscape bears witness – burial mounds and ancient field boundaries speak of millennia of human presence.

The island’s birdlife is particularly remarkable. Nekselø is designated as an EU bird protection area, and during migration seasons you can observe thousands of waders and waterfowl along the coastline. The harbour is the starting point for everything – for birdwatchers, hikers, and those who simply want to experience the silence.

Getting There

Nekselø is reached by the Nekselø ferry from Havnsø. The crossing takes approximately twenty minutes and is an experience in itself – the views over Sejerø Bay with Asnæs in the background are hard to beat. The harbour has limited space for visiting boats, so sailors should be prepared that berths may be occupied during peak season.

Kalundborg Municipality is only a short drive from Havnsø, and from there the motorway towards Copenhagen is easily accessible. Yet Nekselø feels like another world entirely – that is precisely what makes this place special.

Experiences in the Area

Beyond the island itself, the region around Sejerø Bay offers plenty of experiences. Havnsø has a cosy fishing harbour with fresh fish, and driving east you quickly reach Røsnæs – Zealand’s westernmost point with dramatic coastal cliffs. To the south lies the historic town of Kalundborg with its five-towered church and vibrant town centre.

For families with children, the ferry crossing alone is an adventure, and the island’s manageable size makes it perfect for a day trip with little legs. Find more inspiration for experiences in the region at destinationsjaelland.dk.
