A Lighthouse on the Edge of the Kattegat

Sejerø Fyr stands as a white landmark on the northern tip of Sejerø – a small island in the Kattegat belonging to Kalundborg Municipality. For generations, the lighthouse has guided ships safely past the island's rocky coast, and today it has become one of the most photographed subjects on the entire island. Not because it is grand or enormous, but because it stands there so steadfastly, white and clean against the wide sky and the open sea.

Visiting Sejerø Fyr is about more than seeing a lighthouse. It is about feeling the wind from the Kattegat, hearing the waves roll against the stones, and standing in a place where Denmark simply ends and the sea takes over. It is an experience that puts everyday life in perspective and reminds you why we seek out the coast in the first place.

Sejerø – the Island in the Kattegat

Sejerø is one of the small Zealand islands that has preserved an authenticity hard to find elsewhere. With barely 400 permanent residents, no traffic lights, and a silence you can almost hear, the island is a sanctuary for anyone needing to unplug. The ferry from Havnsø on the West Zealand coast runs regularly to Sejerø Harbour, and the pace begins to slow already on the crossing.

The island is elongated and narrow, with dramatic coastlines to the north and west where the sea has shaped cliffs and boulder beaches over millennia. To the south and east, the landscape is gentler with low meadows and sandy beaches that invite swimming and coastal walks. The lighthouse sits on Gniben, the island's northwestern tip, and from here the view across the Kattegat on a clear day is quite simply overwhelming.

Walking to the Lighthouse

The trip out to Sejerø Fyr is a walk in itself. From Sejerø village or the harbour, you can follow paths and small roads northward through the open landscape. Along the way, you pass heathland, dry grassland, and dune areas that are home to a rich flora and fauna. In spring, the meadows bloom with wild orchids, and throughout the year you can spot birds of prey, hares, and – if you are lucky – seals resting on the coastal rocks.

The walk itself is not long, but the terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting. The final stretch towards the lighthouse offers a sharp contrast between the flat sea and the high sky, and when you stand at the foot of the lighthouse, you understand why this exact spot was chosen to send light across the dangerous waters.

Nature and Birdlife

Sejerø is known among ornithologists as an excellent location for observing migratory birds. The island's position in the middle of the Kattegat makes it a natural resting point for birds travelling between Scandinavia and Southern Europe. The area around the lighthouse is particularly rewarding, as the open coast and nearby reefs attract wading birds, terns, and auks. During winter months, you can observe eider ducks, common scoters, and other seabirds in large flocks from the shoreline.

The nature on Sejerø in general is remarkable for such a small island. The varied coastline, open grasslands, and small wooded areas create a mosaic of habitats supporting a surprising biodiversity. It is an island where you can walk for an entire day and constantly discover something new – a flower, a bird, a fossil hidden in the cliff face.

Experiences on and Around Sejerø

Beyond the lighthouse, Sejerø offers a range of experiences suited to those seeking peace and authentic island life. Sejerø village has a small harbour where you can buy fresh fish straight from the boat. The island's church, with its white walls and atmospheric churchyard overlooking the fields, is well worth a visit.

For the active visitor, cycling around the island is a treat – distances are short and the roads are virtually car-free. Swimming is excellent at several beaches, and coastal walks give you the feeling of being alone with nature even in peak season.

Sejerø is part of the West Zealand archipelago, and from the island you have views of both Nekselø and the coast at Havnsø.
